As FKHS staff and faculty continue to improve and meet the needs of students, the implementation of communities will play a part in the reconstruction of the high school.
The community concept can be found in such curriculum ideas as First Things First, Schools Within a School and Schools to Work programs. The idea is for the students to be placed within a community that focuses on their area of interest. The student will then enroll in classes that focus on their interest. A student's math, English, social studies, etc., will be geared towards the career the students has chosen. Of course, local, state, and national standards will still be covered, but the emphasis will be on preparing the students for a career after high school.
FKHS currently has three different communities.9th Grade Success Academy, Business Technology/Communications and Health & Human Services,. Each of these communities is discussed below, as well as the faculty members who are in each of the communities. The communities meet periodically to determine the best possible way of helping students prepare for a career. The community teachers also help in guidance and discipline of the students within their community.
Groups of students sharing similar career interests will be matched with teams of teachers from academic and technical subject areas. By teaming students and teachers, all will become more involved in combining academic instruction with career focused applications. Therefore, students are able to make connections to real world experiences. Communities are designed to meet the needs of ALL students by designing course offerings that prepare students for a successful career and for continuing education. All graduation requirements may be met for college entrance as well as entry to the job market through each community. Field trips, guest speakers and business partnerships will be utilized as often as possible as well as job shadowing, on-the-job training and pre-professional training on location in the community. All Community students will be able to participate in all required and elective classes and in all clubs and sports as usual. In this way, students will increase the probability of pursuing pos-secondary education and enhance their transition into the labor market. Within the career framework, the caring/supportive human environment and expanded opportunities for academic excellence, students will feel more relevance of schoolwork. Field Kindley students will be asked to commit to one community for one year based on a brief career interest survey and their previous career related work. No changes will be allowed within the year's commencement. During enrollment each year a student may petition to change communities after a consultation with teachers and counselors. |
