Information About My Classes

Spanish 1 is a basic class.  It deals with lots of vocabulary and basic survival skills.

Spanish 2 expands the survival skills and begins to add more complex grammar skills.

Spanish 3 is new this year.  Students will study more in-depth vocabulary and learn to deal with past, present, and future verb tenses.

Freshman English covers the basics in literary analysis through a series of short stories, the epic poem The Odyssey, and the play Romeo and Juliet.  Well-structured writing begins with analyzing and practicing the parts of a paragraph to the parts of a theme.  Different types of writing are also considered.  Vocabulary and grammar constitute part of the course of study as well.  Outside reading projects are another aspect of the class.

Information About Me

The 2005-06 school year will mark my 12th year at FKHS.  I am pleased to be able to offer Spanish III this year in addition to Spanish I, Spanish II, and Freshman English.  Spanish Club has also chosen to take on this year’s Snowball Dance, currently set for December 17.  I am also continuing my own education, so things will really be bubbling this year in Room 312.

Professional Background— As mentioned before, this is my 12th year at FKHS.  I graduated from Pittsburg State University’s Honors College program in 1994.  I majored in both Spanish and English and picked up a minor in mathematics.  I am continuing to update my education by attending various conferences throughout the year as well as by pursuing a Master’s degree in English as a Second Language.  This has been an excellent choice as it greatly enhances my techniques as a language teacher in general.

Personal Background—My hometown is Colony, Kansas, where both my parents taught before retiring.  Currently, I reside in Independence because my husband, Nathan, graduated before me and found employment there.  He is a mechanical engineer and works for a small engineering firm which designs and sells industrial dryer systems.  This means he travels a lot, but he likes both the design end of the business as well as the chance to get his hands dirty when it’s time for installation.  We have two children, a son Jonathan, who is entering first grade this year, and a daughter Maurin, who thinks she should also be going to school since her brother gets to go.  Unfortunately, she is only 3 and will have to wait a while.  The whole family enjoys being involved in our church, First United Methodist of Independence, where we regularly attend and where Nathan and I both sing in the choir.   We are also going to be involved in the youth program there this year.  I also enjoy all sorts of needlework and crafts, particularly piecing quilts, sewing doll clothes for Maurin, scrapbooking, crochet, and cross stitch.  I also enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy novels and writing short fiction when time allows.
