What Is GearUP?
- GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.
- GEAR UP is a highly innovative program began by Congress in 1998 that already serves 1.4 million low-income children nationwide.
- GEAR UP differs from other programs in that:
- GearUP raises the academic aspiration of entire cohorts of low-income children not just selected individuals, and equips them with the necessary motivation, knowledge, and skills to succeed along the pathway to college
- GearUP is a workign education partnership that enlists the involvement of parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators as well as community groups, business, labor, and places of worship. GearUP is based on the premise that if no child is to be left behind, none of us can stand aside: Everyone has work to do to help low-income students enroll and succeed in college.
- GearUP is locally relevant and responsive. The program recognizes that parents and local school districts - not Washington burreaucrats - are best prepared to teach children.
