Tutoring and Mentoring
In the GearUp Project, there is a strong emphasis on the use of community resources including tutoring and mentoring. Research indicates that using outside adults as mentors and/or tutors can have a positive effect on student graduation rates and enrollment in college.
GearUp is using a program called YouthFriends to fulfill the mentoring component of the grant. Members of the Coffeyville community that would like to be a mentor fill out an application that is sent to YouthFriends for background checks. After volunteers are passed, they are matched with a student of similar interest. The mentors are scheduled to come once a week as a: "lunch buddy", tutor, career advisor, or as a mentor/friend. As of the 2001 - 2002 school year GearUp has 23 mentors.
YouthFriends Mentoring BanquetGearUp offers tutoring service before school (7:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.), during Seminar class, and after school (3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.). Students from Coffeyville Community College, Field Kindley High School (peer tutors), and members the community are providing the tutoring service.
