Legislative Information

We believe that local boards of education should maintain sufficient authority to effectively govern and oversee public education in their districts. As the primary governing body, our local board is tasked with carefully balancing the diverse needs and interests of all stakeholders - students, parents, educators, and community members. To fulfill this critical responsibility, the board must be empowered with both the necessary decision-making authority and adequate resources.

Inclusive Education: From Early Learning to Career Success

We advocate for comprehensive educational opportunities that equip every student with the academic, technical, and social abilities needed to be prepared for higher education and/or professional pathways after graduation.

  • We prioritize investment in early learning and kindergarten readiness initiatives that address both cognitive development and social foundations for our youngest learners.
  • We maintain that any institution receiving public education funds must satisfy state accreditation standards and welcome ALL students equally, without selective admission practices.

Equitable Education Funding: Supporting Students, Schools, and Educators

We endorse enhanced funding for special education services at state and federal levels and advocate for formula adjustments to ensure more equitable distribution of resources for students with specialized learning needs.

  • We champion the funding of programs and initiatives designed to support academically vulnerable students and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • We promote revising the state aid framework for facilities improvements to incorporate technology investments, creating enriched and secure learning environments that facilitate hands-on learning experiences and workforce development programs.
  • We believe in directing public education dollars to public school systems and stand against initiatives such as vouchers, education savings accounts, scholarship tax credits, tuition tax incentives, and guardian tax deductions for approved educational costs, which redirect public funding away from public schools to institutions not subject to the same regulatory standards.
  • We back initiatives to attract and maintain excellent educators and staff within the education system, including modifications to the KPERS III retirement structure to help draw new certified and support personnel to the profession.

Student Wellbeing: Promoting Mental Health and Inclusive Learning Environments

We advocate for expanded accessibility to mental and behavioral health resources for students, their families, and educational personnel.

  • We are committed to ensuring all students feel secure and supported within our learning environments. We value the diverse nature of our community and strive to foster a welcoming atmosphere where students receive fair treatment, respect, and dignity.
  • We recognize that students' emotional and physical wellbeing is fundamental to their development and academic achievement, and we expect all school professionals who interact with students to maintain exemplary professional and ethical conduct.
